Lights, Camera, Autumn: 3 Natural Lighting Considerations for Fall

Fall is a busy time for me as a photographer. So sometimes it’s hard to believe that the days are getting shorter. And while that often hints that winter is not far behind – it also makes this season one of the best times for wedding and engagement photography.

Landscapes are more textured, vibrant, and colorful. The temperatures are crisp, cool and comfortable for my clients. But above all – the natural lighting is just stunning. Here are three “illuminating” reasons why I love fall photoshoots – and you will, too.

1. Late afternoon sun

Autumnal afternoon sun is gold. Literally. When it gets to be about 4 or 5 o’clock, the sun’s low-angle placement creates a mesmerizing, topaz-like glow over everything. It ripples through tree tops and bounces off water. Sun flares peek through the foliage, and everything else melts into hazy bokeh shapes. It also creates bright silhouettes and a kind of backlit “halo” around faces and veils. The result? A look that is classic fall. And unmistakably romantic.

In addition, fall brings opportunities to capture incredible wedding sunset photos. Since the sun starts to set a little earlier, you get access to that sunset a spring or summer bride may miss later in the evening. Take advantage. And if that’s a photo op you definitely don’t want to miss out on, let me know earlier in the afternoon or prior to the big day. That way, I’ll have it documented and make sure we get it.

2. Cooler weather, warmer colors

The weather may be cooling down, but your wardrobe doesn’t have to. Fall is a great time to wear warm jewel tones like burgundies, navies and egg plants. Not to mention, deep shades give a subtle nod to the changing weather. That kind of consistency helps piece together a stronger photo composition. The outcome: Standout snapshots with an organically warmer color temperature. It’s hard to beat.

3. Overcast = underrated

Even if the sun doesn’t come out for your photoshoot, your pictures will still shine. A foggy or a cloudy fall day produces that clean, rich contrast between the autumn colors, the background, and you. Reds look more dramatic. Yellows and oranges look brighter. Plus, less sun usually also means less shadows and less squinting. What you’ll be left with is beautifully saturated photos that will do anything but disappoint.

Light up over your photos

Anyone who’s ever been in front of my camera knows how particular I am about details. Lighting is just one of those. If you’re interested in fall photos for your wedding or engagement, let’s talk. We’ll discuss how we can deliver exactly what you’re looking for – and leave you with photos you’ll love all year long.
